What is Hajj and Umrah – Understand the Difference among pilgrimages

Hajj and Umrah both are pilgrimages of Islam performed by Muslims all around the globe. A person who has not performed any of them usually fails to understand what is Hajj and Umrah. One of the most ideal ways to understand what is hajj and umrah is to know the difference among both. Although, there are many rituals of Hajj and Umrahare similar, but there are a couple of differences between the two.

The majordifference among both is that Hajj is an imperative duty (fard) for all Muslims who have the resources. It is to be performed among the days of Hajj once in a lifetime. Umrah can be performed at any time throughout the year. It includedTawaf of the Ka’bah and Sa’yee of the Safa and Marwah hills covered in a long gallery.

The natures of both visitsare also different. An umrah is a recommended and non-obligatory pilgrimage, however hajj is a mandatory one. There are also more basics and qualifications for a hajiin conducting a hajj.

If you are still not able to understand the dissimilarity among what is hajj and umrah, then you must know that real point of difference between the two is the fact that Hajj is one of the 5 pillars of Islam. Allah has made it compulsory for all the Muslims to perform Hajj once in their lifetime. As said by Allah in the holy Quran “And pilgrimage to the House is a duty unto Allah for mankind, for him who can find a way thither” (Aal Imran 3:97).

Irrespective of their differences, both umrah and hajj have similarities. Both visitsare marks of solid Muslim faith, devotion, and piety. The two also advance a unified and one Muslim community in retelling and following the steps of the Muslim faith.
